Poll finds Cuomo far ahead of potential GOP rivals

A new poll finds Andrew Cuomo, the presumptive Democratic nominee for governor, far ahead of his potential Republican rivals.

A Marist College Poll put Cuomo 65 percent to 25 percent ahead of Rick Lazio, who once represented Suffolk in Congress.

Cuomo bests Suffolk County Executive Steve Levy by a similar margin and leads Buffalo developer Carl Paladino, 67-22. However, Paladino appears to have cut into Lazio's once- commanding position. Republicans now back Lazio with 38 percent while Levy receives 22 and Paladino 13. In March, Marist found Lazio was supported by 53 percent.

Marist had mixed messages for Democratic Sens. Charles Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand. Just 27 percent said Gillibrand is doing a good job; 50 percent approved of Schumer. The poll of 686 voters, conducted May 3-5, had a margin of error of plus or minus 4 percentage points.
