Spin Cycle: Golisano offers Paladino advice only

New York's last wealthy anti-establishment candidate for governor has been quietly advising the current GOP nominee, Carl Paladino, but has yet to put money where his mouth is.

Paladino told Newsday in Watkins Glen on Saturday that he spoke with Tom Golisano, "a friend," about campaign strategy as recently as Friday.

Campaign manager Michael Caputo said the Rochester businessman had persuaded Paladino to seek the Republican rather than Independence nomination.

"He's advising Carl on a pretty regular basis but we hope that turns into other kinds of resources besides intellectual. But that time will come," Caputo said. Paladino is seeking $12 million from donors.

Independence Party founder Golisano ran for governor three times and lost.
