11 unions endorse Rep. Lee Zeldin’s re-election bid

Rep. Lee Zeldin (R-Shirley) announced Thursday 11 union endorsements in his re-election bid, including the Suffolk County Correction Officers Association, Smart Transportation Divison of the Long Island Rail Road, Transport Workers Union Local 252 and Plumbers Local Union No. 200.

“These endorsements are a result of the Congressman’s strong record fighting for the American worker and middle class,” campaign spokeswoman Sarah Frank said in a statement. She cited Zeldin’s work on the for the Safe Bridges Act, included in the five-year highway bill recently signed into law, and opposition to the the President’s Trade Promotion Authority. He also voted for the Amtrak reauthorization bill and against amendments to federal prevailing wage laws.

Andrew Grunwald, spokesman for Democratic nominee Anna Throne-Holst, said Zeldin supports policies that hurt working families, such as tax breaks for corporations that outsource jobs. “Zeldin always sides with the right-wing Tea Party, not Long Island families,” he said.

Other unions endorsing Zeldin are the International Union of Operating Engineers Local Union 15, 15A, 15B, and 15D, International Union of Operating Engineers Local 138, Transport Workers Union Local 501 (Air Division), New York City & Vicinity District Council of Carpenters, Enterprise Association of Steamfitters Local 638, International Organization of Masters Mates & Pilots, and Laborers Union Local 1298.
