1st S.D.: Dem Maertz survives GOP knockoff try -- so far

We're hearing Jennifer Maertz, whom the Democrats have substituted for earlier-expected candidate Regina Calcaterra, remains on the ballot for now following an appellate ruling that Calcaterra's petitions were valid and therefore could be transferred to supporter Maertz. Republicans are still pressing technical objections to her candidacy in court. Maertz backers have accused the GOP of trying to arrange a general-election walk for LaValle. The veteran senator's supporters have noted in response that Maertz had come forward on July 15 to object to the petitions of Democrat Greg Fischer, who's been ruled off the ballot as well.
