U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer's reported use of the female-dog slur in reference to a flight attendant who told him to shut the cell phone has the 11-year incumbent expressing his regrets. Some details here.

The conversation was apparently overheard by a Republican aide seated nearby.

It's the first we've heard of such a gaffe, or fiasco, for the state's senior senator. One harsh observer asked if he's headed for the kind of verbal trouble into which his predecessor Al D'Amato ran late in his Washington career. Undoubtedly both revered statesmen would shun the comparison.
