It's the first we've heard of such a gaffe, or fiasco, for the state's senior senator. One harsh observer asked if he's headed for the kind of verbal trouble into which his predecessor Al D'Amato ran late in his Washington career. Undoubtedly both revered statesmen would shun the comparison.
