B'khaven GOP taps school district president for town board

Brookhaven Republicans have picked the Longwood School board president to take on Democratic town board member Connie Kepert, a former teacher in the school district.

The town GOP executive committee has recommended Michael LoGuercio, who is not only school board presdent, but has served on the board for nine years and just won a fourth term.

Jesse Garcia, town GOP chairman, called LoGuercio, 54, of Ridge, who is in the insurance business, a “premiere candidate” whom the party has eyed for years. “He’s always been on our radar screen and this year we made a big push for him,” he said.

The GOP, which is holding its convention June 3, sees Kepert's seat as its best shot to take unseat a Democratic inumbent, noting the nearly eight year incumbent in the past has won by narrow margins.

Party officials are also expected to name legislative aide Kevin LaValle, brother of Suffolk GOP chairman John Jay LaValle, to run against maverick Republican town board member Kathleen Walsh, who is switching to the Independence Party, and is running this year on the Democratic ballot line.
