Brookhaven Republicans picked Edward Garboski to challenge freshman Democratic town board member Valerie Cartright in the North Shore 1st District. Garboski, 61, is president of the Port Jefferson Station/Terryville Civic Association and a longtime member of Operating Engineers Local 138. Jesse Garcia, town GOP chairman, said “Ed has demonstrated a strong grasp on the issues and delivered solutions for improving the character of his community.”

Since council districts were formed in 2003, no Republican has won the 1st District. Richard Schaffer, Suffolk Democratic chairman, said Cartright “has worked hard and done a good job in the short time she’s been on the board.”
