Former Rep. Carolyn McCarthy, a vocal gun control proponent, has endorsed Democratic state Senate candidate Ryan Cronin, citing his support for the state’s SAFE Act, which includes a ban on assault weapons and high-capacity magazines.
Cronin, an attorney from Garden City, faces Republican state Sen. Kemp Hannon in the 6th District.
“Although I tend to enjoy my retirement out of politics, ensuring that we elect candidates like Ryan Cronin who are committed to common-sense gun safety efforts to protect our communities takes precedent,” said McCarthy, a Democrat who retired in 2014.
“I see Ryan Cronin among the new generation of leaders on the issue of anti-gun violence and a strong leader who will stand up to the NRA and the corporate gun lobby,” McCarthy said.
Cronin said “We need leaders in Albany who will vote to keep our children and neighborhoods safe from senseless gun violence and [from] politicians who pander to the extreme right and NRA.”
In 2013, Hannon (R-Garden City) voted for the SAFE Act, which was backed by Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo, a Democrat. The law includes tougher background checks on firearms purchases and required safe storage of weapons.
A Senate Republican spokesman did not immediately respond to a request for comment on McCarthy’s endorsement.
