Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo has signed a bill that creates disability retirement benefits for fire marshals in Nassau County.
Curiously, the bill had no primary sponsors from Nassau.
Assemb. Peter Abbate Jr. (D-Brooklyn), chairman of the Civil Service Committee, carried the bill in the Assembly. No senator officially sponsored it. In that chamber, it was advanced by the Rules Committee. Watchdogs have said senators use that tactic when no one wants his/her name attached as sponsor.
Abbate’s memo on the bill says: “It should be noted that Fire Marshals in the adjacent City of New York have a 75% disability benefit.”
The Fire Marshall Benevolent Assocation of Nassau County, the AFL-CIO and the Civil Service Employees Association (New York’s largest public-employee union) all lobbied on the bill.
