An interesting catch by Wayne Barrett on the upstate county clerk, Kathy Hochul of Erie, who gave a speech for gubernatorial nominee Andrew Cuomo at the Democratic convention in Rye: She vocally resisted Gov. Eliot Spitzer's plan to issue drivers' licenses to illegal immigrants. Barrett's piece is here.

Says Barrett:

"No Latino has ever held a statewide or citywide office, an anomaly considering how large a voting bloc Latinos have become in New York. Cuomo's selection of the controversial Hochul may well be perceived by Latinos as adding insult to injury."

Interesting, another seconding speech was delivered by Dominican-born Suffolk Legis. Vivian Viloria-Fisher, who implicitly blasted County Executive Steve Levy, then running for the GOP nomination to oppose Cuomo for governor.
