ALBANY — After Republican candidate Donald Trump energized a crowd at his rally by shaking his head in disgust that the suspect in the weekend bombing in Manhattan will now get a top lawyer to defend him, top medical care “and probably even have room service,” Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo gave Trump a lesson in the Constitution.

“This is America and this is our system and you are innocent until proven guilty and you have a right to counsel and that is the Constitution of the United States of America,” Cuomo told CNN Tuesday. “And that is what makes us who we are.”

Cuomo added that he understands the anger Trump has vented, but: “That is the code of democracy and freedom. That is what they resent about us, so don’t lose your soul in the process, because that is the soul of America … that’s not how we defeat the terrorists. We defeat the terrorists by staying true to who we are.”

On Monday, Ahmad Khan Rahami, 28, was arrested after a brief search and exchange of gunfire. He is accused of terrorism in bombs set off in Manhattan and on the Jersey Shore. Rahami and a police officer were shot.

“Now we will give him amazing hospitalization,” Trump said at his rally in Florida on Monday as he runs for president against Democrat Hillary Clinton. “He will be taken care of by some of the best doctors in the world. He will be given a fully modern and updated hospital room and he will probably even have room service knowing the way our country is. And on top of all of that, he will be represented by an outstanding lawyer.”
