The Suffolk Republicans' last-minute contender for county executive James O'Connor will hold his first fundraiser Monday -- a $100 a head event at Timber Point Country Club, only five doors down from his Great River home.
The former North Hempstead town board member and onetime deputy superintendent in the state Insurance Fund under Gov. George Pataki was named earlier this month to take on Democratic County Executive Steve Bellone who is seeking a second term. O'Connor's highest-priced ticket is $5,000 for a gold sponsor.
O'Connor said he purposely kept the ticket price low to get a larger turnout. He hopes to draw about 300 people and raise $30,000.
O'Connor's fete comes only days before Bellone's June 29 golf outing at Bethpage State Park where prices range as high as $45,000 for a premier sponsor, which includes an exclusive nine holes of golf with the county executive on an empty course. In January, Bellone had $1.4 million in his campaign account.
"I'm still looking for someone who'll pay $40,000 to play golf with me," joked O'Connor. Bellone aides declined comment whether anyone has paid to play nine holes with Bellone.
