Hempstead Republican Anthony Santino, a town board member who is running for Hempstead supervisor, tweeted and posted on his Facebook page Wednesday that former Oyster Bay supervisor Lewis Yevoli, a Democrat, has endorsed him.

Yevoli is the only Democrat who has been elected supervisor of the predominantly Republican town in recent memory. Yevol served three terms during the 1990s.

"Honored to be endorsed by former Oyster Bay Supervisor Lew Yevoli, a great Democrat and someone who exemplifies what public service is all about," Santino wrote on his Facebook page, above a photo of himself with the former supervisor.

Yevoli could not be reached for comment. A representative of Rita Kastenbaum, the Democratic candidate for Hempstead supervisor, also could not be reached.

Yevoli had attempted to oust Nassau Democratic chairman Jay Jacobs in 2007, two years before Democrats lost the county executive's post and lost control of the Nassau  County Legislature, but was unsuccessful.
