Republican members of the state Senate, led by Dean Skelos (R-Rockville Centre) last week took a "secret vote" in favor of putting former Brightwaters Rep.Rick Lazio on the ballot for governor, as opposed to accepting a crossover endorsement of Suffolk Executive Steve Levy, a registered Democrat, the Post reported today.
Since then, Lazio's endorsement by upstate Sen. George Maziarz, sometimes viewed as a wild-card within the conference, was announced. As quoted in the statement from the Lazio campaign, Maziarz said:
"I strongly endorse Rick Lazio for Governor. He will provide the kind of leadership that our state desperately needs. If we are going to make New York State work again, we need someone like Rick who is committed to cutting spending, reducing taxes and growing jobs. Rick is a true fiscal conservative, and he will stop the reckless taxes and spending that have driven our budget off the cliff. New Yorkers need Rick Lazio, and they need him now."
Rick Lazio said, "I am honored to have the support of a true leader and a good friend like Senator Maziarz. We need to take New York state in a different direction. The current path we are on can only lead to more jobs leaving, more of our young people moving away, higher taxes, and a weaker New York. I will make New York State a place we can all be proud of yet again. A wave is building in New York. The people want sweeping and fundamental change and I will bring that change when I am elected Governor."
