Henry Kissinger, hired by Chris Cox's grandfather Richard Nixon to be secretary of state in 1973, endorsed Cox in an email the campaign released late last night.
"I endorse Chris Cox. I believe he will exercise vigorous and honest leadership," the campaign quotes Kissinger as saying.
Color us curious that Cox's people would send out such a high-profile endorsement at 9:15 on a Monday night rather than aiming for a bigger bump the next morning. We've asked Cox's people for an explanation and will post one when it comes.
Cox, of course, faces Randy Altschuler and George Demos in the East End GOP primary to face Rep. Tim Bishop (R-Southampton).
Update (11:20 a.m.): Cox spokesman Jim Teese says e-mail server issues are to blame for the oddly-timed announcement.
