At last week’s GOP state convention, Liz Berney, a Great Neck tax attorney, made the rounds and issued thanks to Nassau Chairman Joseph Mondello for her endorsement in what is shaping up to be her second consecutive challenge to veteran Rep. Gary Ackerman (D-Roslyn Heights).
She most recently boasts explicit support from GOP district leader and activist Bart Haggerty in the Queens portion of the 5th CD and from Rep. Peter King (R-Seaford).
In 2008, Berney drew 40,032 votes against Ackerman’s 103,033, or 28 percent to his 70 percent, with 2 percent going to Jun Policarpio on the Conservative line.
Today, with detractors of President Barack Obama energized, Republican Congressional candidates generally express encouragement for their chances. In her literature, Berney, 53, assails high taxes and spending and what she describes as “the administration’s (and her opponent’s) anti-Israel policies…and complete lack of attention to the recent slaughter of 500 Christians in Nigeria, including many children, by radical Muslims.”
Berney's handout also notes her role as a surrogate debater against Obama surrogates two years ago. It says, “Liz warned the district about Obama’s socialist, anti-American and anti-Israel views and advisers.”
“Liz is a member of the Republican Jewish Coalition leadership,” he leaflet notes. “There are currently no Republican Jewish women in Congress. Liz looks forward to changing this!”
She tells us she will challenge Ackerman on what she characterized as several ethical issues, from handling of his petitions two years ago to this procurement matter raised in the Daily News earlier this year.
