As reported here by Newsday’s Michael Gormley, irascible Buffalonian Carl Paladino, who lost a landslide to Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo four years ago, says of newly declared GOP candidate Rob Astorino, the Westchester executive, that the latter cannot and will not win.
Paladino added: “Nevertheless if (Donald) Trump does not run and Astorino does denounce the RINOs and purge them from the party, then I will support Astorino.”
Of course Astorino, who at least has won two elections in Westchester and evokes bipartisan appeal in his declaration statement, might well see fit to reject advice from a perpetually acid-tongued millionaire real estate businessman whose poor 2010 performance appeared to hurt down-ballot Republicans statewide.
It doesn’t help Astorino’s obviously underdog cause to have this kind of static -- even from an alienated member of the shrinking GOP who, almost biorythmically, calls for those he dislikes to be “purged.”
Is the party still paying for the failure of gubernatorial ex-hopeful Rick Lazio to beat Paladino in a nasty western New York-heavy primary last time out?
