Democrat Matt Meng of East Norwich said Monday he’s running for the state Assembly seat vacated by Republican Rob Walker, who stepped down to become chief deputy Nassau County executive under Edward Mangano.

The 15th AD is centered in Hicksville and encompasses the northern portion of Oyster Bay Town and parts of North Hempstead and Hempstead towns.

Meng, an environmental activist who owns an auto repair shop, has long been active in politics and ran unsuccessfully for the Oyster Bay Town Board last year.

A call to the Nassau Republican Party was not immediately returned Monday.

[UPDATE: Republican spokesman Tony Santino said the party would likely name a candidate soon, perhaps later Monday.]
