Mineola's Martins to oppose Sen. C. Johnson

It’s official: Mineola Mayor Jack Martins will be the Republican candidate against Democratic State Sen. Craig Johnson (D-Port Washington) this fall.

Nassau Republican Chairman Joseph Mondello made the announcement Sunday at the party’s “Victory Brunch” at the Uniondate Marriott, insiders confirm. Newsday reporter Sid Cassese was not allowed into the event, which reportedly was packed.

Martins ran unsuccessfully against U.S. Sen. Carolyn McCarthy, a Democrat, in 2008 when Democrats were riding high with Presidential candidate Barack Obama. But the faltering economy and anti-incumbent fever has since generated big Republican victories in Nassau and in Massachusetts.
