The Town of Oyster Bay board on Dec. 17 amended its 2014 and 2013 budgets to change something regarding town employees -- but the town isn't saying so far what they did. The board passed two resolutions that refer to a procedure to amend “grades, salaries and titles as required and requested by department heads” and to “additions and deletions” that the resolution said were in a separate document. That document has not yet been made public.
Oyster Bay spokeswoman Marta Kane said town attorney Leonard Genova needed to review the document before they could release it.
“We just asked for an extra day or so to review it,” said Oyster Bay spokeswoman Marta Kane. “We’re not refusing anything.”
Robert Freeman, executive director of the New York State Committee on Open Government, said a review by a lawyer was unnecessary.
“The town is being unnecessarily resistant in consideration of the nature of the request and the likelihood that there is public interest in the manner in which public money is being spent,” Freeman said in an email.
Genova told a reporter he should file a Freedom of Information Law request to get the information.
“We’ll get back to you after we look at the FOIL request,” Genova said. “If you are entitled to it, you’re going to get it.”
Genova said the document could have personal information that would need to be redacted.
