Schumer, on LI, weighs in on gasoline crisis

This was received from Sen. Charles Schumer, who called for National Grid to give gas stations priority in restoring electric power, citing dangerously low fuel resources for fire companies and other emergency vehicles.

Today U.S. Senator Charles E. Schumer called on the Long Island Power Authority to prioritize restoring power to gas stations in order to help alleviate the gas shortage plaguing Long Island.

“Now that the Port of New York and New Jersey have opened, and infrastructure is slowly coming back online, gas is once again flowing onto the Island. However, it will take a number of days for the supply network to reach its normal capacity. But according to the gas retailers and local officials I’ve been speaking to, there are still many gas stations with available supply sitting without power. We are currently in a gas crisis and LIPA needs to add stations with available supply to its priority list immediately. I have been hearing reports of fire departments without gas, and gas lines so long they are shutting down main roads.

Today, I was on Long Island with the U.S. Army Corps announcing that millions of dollars and federal contractors are coming to Long Island to remove trees and assist in brining power back to homeowners. Getting power back on to Long Island homes needs to be a top priority but the Island is running out of gas rapidly. Stations need to be moved up the priority list.

A lack of power remains a huge hurdle to getting the gas we have in the ground on Long Island to the generators and cars of Long Islanders, so I am calling on LIPA to prioritize gas stations as they work get the lights back on. Focusing on the significant number of gas stations we have offline will still have a disproportionally big effect on helping Long Islanders resume some sense of normalcy.”
