Suffolk legislators on Levy news

Legis. John M. Kennedy Jr (R-Nesconset): "I'm still mulling it over. No comment, put that in, no comment."

Kennedy: "I support Republicans. I will support any genuine, committed Republican."

Legis. Tom Cilmi (R-Islip): "As far as my support for Steve Levy goes, right now our candidate is Rick Lazio and I fully intend to support him as long as he is in the race. The county executive and I will have to have a discussion about his intention for our party, when three months ago he spent time campaigning for my opponent."

Cilmi: "I will support the Republican nominee for governor, but any candidate I support will have to be a Republican."

Legis. Kate Browning (WF-Shirley): "I'm not at all surprised. I suspected it all along. I think as a Legislature we're all united when it comes to the county executive. The Democrats don't get along with him and the Republicans don't get along with him."

Legis. DuWayne Gregory (D-Amityville): "When Levy becomes governor, I'll become the newest New Jersey resident."

Legis. Jack Eddington (I-Medford): "Can you ever believe what this man says? This is just typical of all the interactions you have with him."

Asked if he would support the Independence Party candidate for governor, Eddington said: "I'll have to talk to (Chairman) Frank (MacKay). It's not supporting the party, it's what the person does for me. I don't know."

Legis. Vivian Viloria-Fisher (D-Setauket): "He left the Democratic Party a long time ago and I couldn't be more pleased that he did it officially."

Legis. Steve Stern (D-Huntington): "I think it's exciting for him, it's exciting for Suffolk County, it's exciting for Long Island."

Asked if he would support Levy's run for governor, Stern crossed his arms, paused for 20 seconds, and said: "How would I put it? I haven't given it much thought. I've always been a strong suporter of many of his principles. I hope that those are the issues that he talks about."

Stern: "I don't think any Democrat would believe I would support the nominee just because he or she is a Democrat. I would be open to supporting Levy. I would be open to supporting anybody on any line if I felt it would be right for our community."

Legis. Lou D'Amaro (D-North Babylon): "I've always supported him in the past and I think he'd make an excellent governor. We've been friends for 25 years and I've always supported him."

D'Amaro said he would wait to say if he'll support Levy until after Levy's announcement tomorrow.
