To other elected Dems, Cuomo urges unity of party agenda

As does any governor, Andrew M. Cuomo runs the state party, in this case Democratic. In that role, he held a conference call last week with other Democratic elected officials. Political blogger Azi Paybarah phoned in and recorded the talk, though as he notes on the Capital web site, it wasn’t a public broadcast. He advised fellow Democrats to carry off a unified and aggressive message, which is reminiscent of his own administration, and “tightening” that message. “It can’t always be the negative yells and the positive silence,” Cuomo told them.

Suffolk Executive Steve Bellone said in part, as you can hear on Azi’s recording linked here: “We were all amazed at the gun safety legislation you got approved and how quickly it was done…You just keep pulling rabbits out of hats here and we just can’t wait to see what you do next.”

“For me and for our region in particular, what we’re most appreciative of is the focus on recovery after Hurricane Sandy. You know how devastated we were. You were with us from the beginning, before the storm, helping us prepare and you toured areas of Suffolk County that were absolutely devastated.”

Last Tuesday, Bellone told Cuomo, “Congressman [Peter] King was on the floor of the House and he said more than a couple of times that this was the most detailed recovery package that had been put together by any state for any natural disaster.” And, Bellone hailed commissions Cuomo created to explore utilities, preparedness and future disaster measures. “For us the focus this year will be on recovery and we continue to appreciate your leadership on that issue.”
