Top Nassau Republicans honored at party dinners

Nassau Republican Chairman Joseph Mondello was to be honored Friday evening by the North Valley Stream Republican Club, run by his top lieutenant, Joseph Cairo, the president of Nassau's Off-Track Betting Corp.

The $125-a-ticket event was moved from North Valley Stream to the Sand Castle catering hall in Franklin Square, which has a room large enough to handle the expected crowd.

A day earlier, Nassau’s Conservative Party recognized Cairo at the Fox Hollow catering hall in Woodbury. The minor party, which usually endorses Republican candidates, gave Cairo its highest honor, the “Torch of Freedom” award.

Although the Conservative party dinner was held the same night as Nassau's Independence Party annual spring fundraiser, some 200 people showed up, and Republicans went back and forth between the two events, an attendee reports. Nassau County Court Judge James McCormack, a Democrat who wants to be elected a Supreme Court justice this year, also attended the Conservative Party fundraiser.

If Mondello, who has served as chairman for more than 30 years, ever decides to retire, Cairo is expected to be first in line to succeed him.
