The largest union representing Long Island Rail Road employees has endorsed Democrat Thomas Suozzi for Nassau County executive.
“We are confident that once again under your leadership as Nassau County executive, you can bring jobs back to Nassau as well as make it attractive and affordable for our young population to return after college,” wrote Anthony Simon, general chairman of the United Transportation Union Local 645 in a March 28 letter to Suozzi. “The lives of many hardworking men and women will be enhanced when you are again elected as the county executive.”
The union represents LIRR conductors, track workers, car cleaners and repairmen.
“In the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, UTU members worked around the clock to get the largest commuter railroad in the Northeast back up and running in record time,” Suozzi said in response to the endorsement.
Suozzi is being challenged by East Hills businessman Adam Haber for the Democratic nomination. The winner will take on Republican County Executive Edward Mangano in November.
