Suffolk’s Association of Municipal employees, which has $1.2 million in its PAC coffers, has endorsed Republican Rudy Sunderman for term-limited county Legis. Kate Browning’s Third District seat and is backing incumbent Democrats Sarah Anker and Monica Martinez.
The union endorsed 14 county legislature incumbents — nine Democrats and five Republicans. For three open seats the AME, Suffolk’s largest public employee union, backed Democrats Joe McDermott, Brightwaters mayor, in the 11th District; Susan Berland, a Huntington Town Board member, in the 16th District; and Tom Donnelly, a Babylon Town Board member, in the 17th. They also backed GOP state Sen. Phil Boyle for county sheriff.
Dan Levler, AME president, said the union backed Sunderman because his “presence has been felt in the community” and Anker, a perennial marginal in a heavily GOP district, “because of her record and her attention to local issues.” Levler also said the union is “strongly backing” Martinez in a Sept. 12 Democratic primary with Angela Ramos, wife of Assemb. Phil Ramos (D-Brentwood).
