THOMAS F. BARRAGA
BACKGROUND: Barraga, 65, of West Islip, also is running on the Conservative line. A state assemblyman for 23 years, Barraga is seeking his third term as a county lawmaker. Earlier, Barraga served as Islip Town clerk and before that worked for Dun & Bradstreet and Pfizer Inc.
ISSUES: Barraga has lashed out at his opponent, an oil dealer and landscaper, as a polluter who was charged by state officials for not reporting spills and spreading pesticides without permits. Barraga also said his first priority in this bad economy is to avoid property tax increases and layoffs of county employees. He even directed that his share of money given to each legislator for local projects be reallocated to reduce the county's budget shortfalls.
