Tom Suozzi mum on Democrats’ race for Nassau County executive

Democratic Rep. Tom Suozzi, a former two-term Nassau County executive, has no plans to make an endorsement in the race for the Democratic nomination for his old job.

His spokeswoman Kim Devlin said Suozzi is, “not in a political or campaign mindset at the moment. No plan to make an endorsement in the near future.”

In an interview, Suozzi (D-Glen Cove) said he was “staying out of the race for now.”

The Democrats expected to compete in the September county executive primary are Legis. Laura Curran (D-Baldwin), who has been endorsed by the Nassau Democratic Party; Assemb. Charles Lavine (D-Glen Cove) and County Comptroller George Maragos.

Curran worked part-time in the Suozzi’s communications office from 2006 to 2007, and Suozzi recruited Lavine to run for the Assembly in 2004. Lavine did not endorse Suozzi during the Democratic primary in the Third Congressional District last year.

Maragos was sharply critical of Suozzi’s policies during his two successful campaign for comptroller.

Suozzi served as county executive from 2002 through 2009 but lost a third term to Republican Edward Mangano. Suozzi lost a rematch to Mangano in 2013.
