State: Portions of parkways still closed

State Police Monday reiterated that all north-south parkways in Nassau and Suffolk counties are closed south of Montauk Highway and Merrick Road, and that they will remain closed for some time.

The New York State Department of Transportation also said that the entire length of Ocean Parkway is closed.

"Everything we closed last week -- all the north-south parkways -- are still closed despite some reports that they've been reopened," State Police spokesman Frank Bandiero said. "If you've heard they're open, it's not true."

Bandiero said the Ocean Parkway is in particularly bad shape, overwashed by the Atlantic Ocean last week during superstorm Sandy.

He said that between the Meadowbrook and the Jones Beach Tower at Wantagh Parkway the road is passable.

But, he said, the eastbound roadway is covered in sand, for the most part, all the way out to Captree State Park, and said debris covered much of the westbound side -- though a lot of that has been removed.

It is not clear if the road itself was damaged or may be damaged. The state Department of Transportation has reported the road was closed due to damage caused by flooding from the storm.
