Stony Brook University held its 54th commencement Friday at Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium in Stony Brook

Number of degrees

3,472 bachelor's degrees; 1,546 master's degrees; 469 doctoral degrees; 259 certificates; 129 MDs; 41 DDS

Faculty speaker

Dr. Samuel L. Stanley, the university president, told graduates they are receiving degrees from one of the "best universities in the world" and "most prestigious universities in North America."

Special speaker

Jerrold L. Stein, Stony Brook's retiring dean of students, said: "Like many of you, this is a bittersweet moment for me. It's so sad to say goodbye, but it's also a time for us to look back to see what we have accomplished."

Student speaker

Ali Syed, of East Patchogue, chosen by students and faculty, said: "Stony Brook students will forever be defined by talent and promise, not by financial resources or class status. Now that's a Seawolf!"

Chantal Douglas, 22, of Brooklyn; engineering

"This journey has been self-reflective. It allowed me to make great relationships and find out who I am."

Xin Lu, 25, of Shanghai, China; business

"It's a long way from China to here. The lifestyle and the studying are so different -- more exciting here."

Dylan Dreisch, 21, of Staten Island; electrical engineering

"It's a great day of significance; starting a new chapter and a new life."

Jashna Benday, 22, of Gujarat, India; biomedical engineering

"I loved Stony Brook. My four years here were great. I think I learned a lot."
