Stony Brook University holds commencement

Number of degrees

3,472 bachelor's degrees; 1,546 master's degrees; 469 doctoral degrees; 259 certificates; 129 MDs; 41 DDS

Faculty speaker

Dr. Samuel L. Stanley, the university president, told graduates they are receiving degrees from one of the "best universities in the world" and "most prestigious universities in North America."

Special speaker

Jerrold L. Stein, Stony Brook's retiring dean of students, said: "Like many of you, this is a bittersweet moment for me. It's so sad to say goodbye, but it's also a time for us to look back to see what we have accomplished."

Student speaker

Ali Syed of East Patchogue chosen by students and faculty, said: "Stony Brook students will forever be defined by talent and promise, not by financial resources or class status. Now that's a Seawolf!"
