6 Suffolk beaches closed to bathing, officials say

Six beaches in Suffolk County were closed to bathing Saturday after bacteria in the water was found to exceed safe levels, according to the Suffolk County Department of Health Services.

According to a news release from agency, the following beaches are affected:

  • Lake Ronkonkoma Beach, Islip;
  • Tanner Park Beach, Copiague;
  • Benjamin Beach, Bay Shore;
  • Fleets Cove Beach, Huntington;
  • Crab Meadow Beach, Northport;
  • Huntington Beach Community Association, Centerport.

In a news release Suffolk County Commissioner of Health Dr. James Tomarken said bathing in bacteria-contaminated water can result in gastrointestinal illness, as well as infections of the eyes, ears, nose and throat.

The release said the beaches will reopen when further testing reveals the bacteria have subsided to acceptable levels.
