Two women face charges in a string of thefts of pocketbooks and wallets from vehicles parked outside two Suffolk County gyms in a scheme that involved snatching key fobs from locker rooms, police said Friday.
Alexandra Salata, 27, of Lake Shore Drive, Ronkonkoma, and Christina Nicosia, 26, of Picket Lane, Centereach, were arrested Thursday in the crime spree that took place Nov. 13 to Monday, Suffolk County police said.
Police said Salata and Nicosia stole items at Planet Fitness locations on Middle Country Road in Centereach and Sunrise Highway in Bay Shore. Police did not release the value of the items.
Police said that during the incidents one of the women would enter a locker room and steal car keys from coats or unlocked lockers and pass the key fob to the partner outside, who then located the vehicle and stole the items.
The inside partner returned the keys to the locker or coat of the unsuspecting victim, police said, adding that Salata and Nicosia then used stolen credit cards to make purchases.
Each was arraigned in First District Court in Central Islip Friday on five counts of fourth-degree grand larceny and held pending $25,000 bail.
Nicosia's attorney, Michael Annibale of Garden City, said his client denies the allegations. "We intend to fight the charges vigorously," he said.
Salata was represented by Legal Aid, which does not comment on cases.
