Amityville to move against two derelict buildings

Amityville Village will begin demolition proceedings for buildings at 6 Belmont Ct. and 21 DeForest St.

Deputy Mayor Jessica Bernius said the two-story wood-framed home at 6 Belmont Ct. has been vacant and boarded up for 15 years.

Mayor James Wandell called the one-story commercial building at 21 DeForest St. “a disaster. It’s been hanging around for years, and we’re finally getting something done.”

Public hearings where the property owners and their neighbors can speak will be held Oct. 24. Trustees could schedule demolition for early November, with the costs billed to the property owners.

Village officials have increased their focus on derelict properties, passing new laws to strengthen the village’s response and hiring a consultant to help guide the process.

Most recently, the village board created three new part-time positions for quality-of-life officers to patrol and respond to neighbors’ complaints.
