A Riverhead man who was driving a stolen all-terrain vehicle on a public roadway and fled from police was arrested after a chase on Tuesday night, police said.
Riverhead police said officers were on patrol around Roanoke Avenue and Southern Parkway on Tuesday night about 9 p.m. when they saw Antonio T. Reeder Jr., 20, driving the ATV on Southern Parkway, and tried to pull him over.
Reeder then turned around and fled from the officers east down Southern Parkway, police said, and a low-speed pursuit ensued. Reeder led the patrol unit down Elton Street and east onto East Main Street, then continued east and crossed Route 25, heading north onto Doctors Path, police said.
When he reached a PSEG Long Island property, Reeder hopped off the ATV and ran into the woods, police said. The Riverhead police K-9 unit and other officers scoured the woods, eventually found Reeder hiding and arrested him.
Reeder was charged with multiple traffic violations, police said, and a routine Department of Motor Vehicles check showed that the registered owner of the ATV had reported it stolen in September. Reeder was then subsequently charged with fourth-degree criminal possession of stolen property, police said.
Reeder was taken to Riverhead Police headquarters and was held overnight Tuesday. He is being held at the Suffolk County jail in Riverhead in lieu of $5,000 bail, according to jail records.
