Arrests in Blue Point rob attempt, car chase

A man and a woman were arrested Thursday after an attempted robbery at a Blue Point doughnut shop that included a vehicle chase an estimated 15 miles, Suffolk County police said.

Fifth Precinct officers responding to a 911 call about 9:50 p.m. learned that two people had just tried to rob a Dunkin' Donuts on Montauk Highway, police said.

One of the suspects, Kerry Crosby, 22, of Farmingville, was arrested at the scene and is charged with attempted robbery, police said. The second suspect, a man, ran off.

A short while later, the male suspect was seen driving a 1997 Jeep Cherokee on Route 112 in Medford. Responding officers tried to stop the Jeep and then pursued it until the driver lost control and it overturned on County Road 51 in Eastport, police said.

Det. Lt. Edward Reilly, commanding officer of the Fifth Squad, said police did not calculate the distance of the chase but agreed that 15 miles -- the distance between Medford and Eastport on county road maps -- is "about right."

The driver, Craig Cherney, 23, of Mastic Beach, was arrested and charged with attempted robbery.

Cherney also is charged with first-degree robbery in the Wednesday robbery of a Carvel store in Bayport, police said.

He was taken to Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center in East Patchogue and will be either arraigned at the hospital or after he is released at First District Court in Central Islip, police said.

Police did not describe his injuries.
