Police: Man found dead in Bay Shore

Suffolk police are investigating the cause of death of an 83-year-old Bay Shore man found Tuesday morning in his backyard.

According to a police spokeswoman, the unidentified man suffers from dementia. His wife told investigators the man went to bed at around 8 p.m. Monday night and was found at about 7:30 a.m. in his backyard. Police said an autopsy is being conducted to determine if the man's death is storm related or from natural causes.

According to the National Weather Service, heavy snow continued to blanket the area at around that time, with wind gusts reported at Long Island MacArthur Airport at about 7 a.m. of 30 miles per hour, with windchill temperatures at 6 degrees.

Results of the autopsy will take a few days, said a police spokeswoman.
