A Bay Shore man is in critical condition after he suffered an apparent medical emergency while driving in Bohemia, police said Tuesday.

Suffolk County police said Joseph Campanelli, 46, was driving westbound on Sunrise Highway when he began to have the apparent medical crisis at about 5:10 p.m. on Tuesday. Witnesses told police he appeared to be slumped over the wheel, police said.

Campanelli’s vehicle then struck the right side guard rail near Lincoln Avenue. Highway Patrol Officer Lorin Cirincione arrived and pulled Campanelli out the vehicle shortly before Highway Patrol Officer Mark Kipybida arrived, police said. Police said both officers performed CPR on Campanelli until paramedics arrived.

Campanelli was taken to Southside Hospital in Bay Shore in critical condition.

Police said the investigation is continuing and are asking anyone with more information to call the Fifth Squad at 631-852-8552.
