Bay Shore music teacher sentenced in sex abuse case

A former music teacher from Bay Shore convicted of sex abuse after an earlier conviction was overturned was sentenced Wednesday to 11 months in jail.

Richard Tuthill, 37, was convicted in October in First District Court in Central Islip of second-degree sexual abuse, a misdemeanor, the Suffolk district attorney's office said.

Tuthill was initially charged with abusing two 13-year-old girls during private voice lessons in his home in 2005. Newsday is not naming the girls because of the nature of the case.

He appealed his 2007 conviction for abusing one of the girls. He was acquitted last year of abusing the other. In April, an appellate court ordered a new trial after ruling prosecutors in the 2007 case should have been barred from questioning Tuthill about alleged prior cases.
