A two-car drunken-driving crash left three injured in Dix Hills on Tuesday night, after one vehicle crashed into a utility pole and another crashed into woods, police and fire officials said.
A spokesman for the Dix Hills Fire Department said a man and two women were taken to Huntington Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries after the 8 p.m. crash on Vanderbilt Parkway.
Suffolk County police said the driver of the Toyota, identified as Bernabe Ortega Vella, 50, of Brentwood, was treated and released -- then was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated.
The condition of the other two injured was not immediately known on Wednesday.
Police said Ortega Vella was headed east on Vanderbilt when his Toyota Sienna minivan crossed the double-yellow centerline near Candlewood Path, striking a westbound Maxima head-on. Officials said the Sienna hit a pole, and the Maxima careened off into a wooded area.
About 30 volunteers from the Dix Hills Fire Department, as well as the Dix Hills Rescue Squad, responded with three heavy-rescue trucks, three ambulances and first-responder and paramedic units under the direction of Chief Robert Fling. It was not immediately clear if the victims were from one or both vehicles.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
Ortega Vella faces arraignment Wednesday in First District Court in Central Islip.
