Brentwood crash kills a man, injures a woman, police say

A Central Islip man was killed, and a female passenger seriously injured early Monday when, police said, he lost control of his van and it flipped into a wooded area off the Long Island Expressway service road in Brentwood.

The victim, Leonard Joseph, 50, was ejected from the van and died at the scene, police said. The injured woman was identified as Rachel Boerke, 25, of Huntington Station. Police said she was taken to Southside Hospital in Bay Shore with what were called non-life-threatening injuries. Monday night, she was listed in stable condition, police said.

The single-vehicle crash occurred at 3:36 a.m. on the South Service Road at Crooked Hill Road. The crash closed Crooked Hill Road between the LIE and Sagtikos Parkway for several hours, police said.

Police said the vehicle was a 2001 Chevrolet Express van that went out of control and crashed into trees and a fence, causing the van to overturn.

The crash scene is near the Pilgrim Psychiatric Center site. Additional details were not available and police said it remains under investigation.

Police are asking anyone with information regarding the crash to call Third Squad detectives at 631-854-8352.
