Brookhaven Town declares snow emergency

The Town of Brookhaven has declared a snow emergency, and Supervisor Mark Lesko said he is "urging residents not to leave their homes today" because of snow that has reached as high as 25 inches in Mastic.

Lesko said the order allows him to close "particular dangerous roads" that have been rendered impassable by snow. The town has more than 400 vehicles cleaning roads, but they "are having difficulty plowing today because of the volume of the snow," Lesko said.

Lesko added that residents should park in their driveways, not in the street. He said the emergency order does not require businesses to close today.

Other Long Island towns that have declared states of emergency include Hempstead, Riverhead and Southampton.
