Police: Teen jumped into pool, but couldn't swim

A Central Islip teenager who can't swim is in serious condition after jumping into a pool at an apartment complex early Tuesday, Suffolk County police said.

The youth, 16, jumped into the deep end of a pool at an apartment complex at Hawthorne Avenue in Central Islip, at about 12:04 a.m., a police spokeswoman said.

The youth is not a resident of the complex, the spokeswoman said. It was not immediately clear how he was able to get into the pool area, she said, and police are not sure if the youth was staying with a resident of the apartment complex.

"Apparently, he did not know how to swim," the spokeswoman said.

The teen was taken to a nearby hospital, where he is listed in serious condition, the spokeswoman said.

She did not immediately know how the youth was rescued, saying the investigation is continuing.
