A Commack Middle School teacher completed a four-year goal on Saturday of running a marathon in all 50 states, raising more than $3,600 for children with cancer in the process.

Social studies teacher Chris Boundy, 36, hit his 50th and final state -- and completed his 70th lifetime marathon -- with a time of 3:54:06 at the Eversource Hartford Marathon in Connecticut.

"When I started the 50-states goal in 2011, I wanted to make it more than just a personal accomplishment," Boundy said in a statement. "So I decided it was also an opportunity to raise funds for a worthwhile cause."

His goal was to raise $2,500 for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.

When the eighth-grade social studies classes learned of his goal, they helped organize fundraising for their teacher. Just before the Hartford marathon, he had raised $1,425, but the final tally came out to $3,625 by race day.

"Running marathons may not be easy," he said. "But it is nothing compared to what people go through every day when they are fighting cancer."

He said he's not done with marathons yet. "I still plan to run marathons consistently," he said. "I will focus on doing more international races as well as some closer to home that I haven't had the chance to hit yet."
