A drive-by shooter fired at a group of teenagers outside a Copiague home late Monday afternoon, hitting one of them in the leg, Suffolk police said.

They scattered from the driveway on Great Neck Road as someone in a car fired two or three shots about 5 p.m., said Det. Sgt. John Kempf of the First Precinct.

The victim, 16, was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center in West Islip and was expected to survive his leg wound, he said. He is a relative of the homeowner and was interviewed by detectives, Kempf said.

Detectives are not sure if the victim was the target but believe that is unlikely.

When police came, only a few in the group had remained at the scene, and investigators Monday night were trying to track them down for interviews to get details, such as the color of the car and motive, Kempf said.

"There's a lot of possibilities we're going to be looking at," said Kempf, declining to cite details.

Detectives said anyone with information could call 631-854-8152 or Crime Stoppers at 800-220-8477.
