Cops: 1 dead, driver faces DWI charge in Manorville crash

A Manorville man was arrested on a drunken driving charge Wednesday after an early-morning crash that killed his passenger, police said.

William Christie, 69, was driving a 2002 Jeep "when he apparently lost control" while exiting eastbound Sunrise Highway at Exit 59 in Manorville and the vehicle overturned, Suffolk County police said.

The passenger, Michael Demartino, 59, of Manorville, was pronounced dead at the scene of the 3:26 a.m. accident, police said.

Detectives arrested and charged Christie with driving while intoxicated, police said. He was taken to a hospital to be treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

The timing of his arraignment was unclear.

Police are continuing the investigation and urge anyone with information about the accident to call the Vehicular Crime Unit at 631-852-6555 or Suffolk County Crime Stoppers at 800-220-TIPS.
