Cops: 10 big trucks cited at checkpoint

Violations associated with more than $100,000 in fines were issued to truckers Friday at a commercial vehicle checkpoint on the Long Island Expressway in Yaphank, Suffolk police said.

Five trucks were taken off the roads and 57 summonses for weight and safety violations given out by highway patrol and motor carrier safety officers at the checkpoint, near Exit 66 Sills Road, police said.

From 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., officers targeted overloaded trucks and ones that appeared to be in dangerous operating condition, police said.

Officers had 25 vehicles weighed, an effort to protect roads from damage caused by overweight vehicles, police said.

Ten trucks were cited for being overloaded, violations that could lead to more than $100,000 in fines, police said.

Also, five vehicles were inspected and sidelined after safety violations were found, police said.
