Cops: Amityville driver who hit house was drunk

An Amityville man was drunk Saturday when he drove his car off the road in Hempstead and into a fencepost, sending it flying into the head of a woman who was in her yard smoking a cigarette, Nassau County police said Sunday.

Lorenzo Kelly, 42, of 98 Monroe St., then drove his 2003 Buick into the woman's West Graham Avenue home, knocking it off its foundation, before fleeing the scene and hitting two cars on Nassau Road in Uniondale, police said.

The woman, 38, and a man, 50, who was sitting in one of the cars were taken to a hospital with injuries that police said were not life-threatening.

Detectives charged Kelly with assault, reckless endangerment, reckless driving, driving while intoxicated, driving while ability impaired and leaving the scene of an accident.

Police said he had pills containing the narcotic pain medicine codeine when he was arrested.

Kelly was admitted to a hospital with injuries and will be arraigned as soon as medically practical, police said. His car was impounded.
