Cops: Charges unlikely in Holtsville toddler's death

Criminal charges are unlikely in the death of a Holtsville toddler who was found by his father tangled in a window blind chain, a police spokeswoman said.

The boy, identified by police as 2-year-old Brendon McCarthy, was pronounced dead on Saturday.

Police are still investigating how the child became entangled in the chain, said Det. Sgt. Thomas Groneman of the Suffolk Police. The chain was a loop used to open the blinds, Groneman said.

There were no witnesses who saw the child become entangled, Groneman said.

Family members declined to talk to a reporter Sunday.

The child's father attempted cardiopulmonary resuscitation after finding the boy at about 2:45 p.m. Friday, police said. The boy had been unattended for less than 10 minutes when the father found him tangled in the chain, which was attached to vertical blinds in the den, police said.
