Cops detonate explosives at school
Suffolk County police said officers detonated a "highly explosive" batch of old chemicals found at a private school in Stony Brook on Tuesday night.
An employee who found the chemicals at the Stony Brook School notified authorities, who responded to the scene about 4:30 p.m., police said. Officials said the flammable chemicals were inside a chemical lab and had been on campus for more than 30 years.
Officers took the chemicals to a field on school grounds where they were detonated. The school, on Chapman Parkway, has a college preparatory, boarding and day program with a 55-acre campus, according to its website.
